SUMMARY:Join Boys & Girls Clubs to provide one-on-one literacy tutoring to elementary-aged students that are reading below grade level
DESCRIPTION:What’s it all about? \nWe’re teaming up with a national organization with proven results\, Reading Partners\, to offer one-on-one reading program for elementary-age readers. It’s easy\, fulfilling\, and requires just two 45 minute sessions with youth each week. Volunteer reading tutors work one-on-one with Club members using an easy-to-follow curriculum and tools powered by Reading Partners. No prior tutoring experience is necessary. \nReading Partners Curriculum \nAll volunteer tutors will complete a 90-minute onboarding and training to learn the curriculum. Giving you all the tools you need to be a successful tutor! This onboarding will occur virtually in two sessions: Monday\, 2/26/24\, from 5:30 to 6:30 pm\, or Thursday\, 2/29/24\, from 12:00 to 1:00 pm. Tutors must attend one of these two trainings. If for some reason you are not able to attend one of these sessions\, please let us know. \nWhere? When? \nVolunteer tutors will work with youth at one of these three Club sites: North Seattle Club (Greenwood)\, Rotary Club (Central District)\, or Southwest Club (White Center). There could be an opportunity for virtual tutoring sessions\, as well. This volunteer role will start the first week of March and finish the week of June 11th. Tutoring sessions will occur on weekdays during after-school hours: Mon\, Tue\, Thu\, Fri from 3-6 pm\, and Wed from W-2-6 pm. Volunteers can choose the session time(s) that works best for their schedule. \nThe optimum commitment is to read with one student twice a week for 45 minutes. You will work with the Reading Partners staff lead at your assigned Club to set a schedule that works best for both of you. If you have to miss a session\, there will be the opportunity for fill-in reading partners (so youth don’t miss sessions). \nVolunteer Requirements \nWe are looking for volunteers who have a positive attitude toward learning and diversity\, are open to feedback and coaching\, and are patient with young people while also holding high expectations. And most of all\, we expect a commitment to your buddy and tutoring through the program completion in June. \nAll volunteers must undergo a background check\, complete safety training\, and submit immunization records for COVID-19 and MMR. Links to submit these items can be found below. Please also create an account here on VolunteerHub. \nSafety Training Videos\nSafety Training Quiz\nBackground Check: http://www.candidatelink.com/positiveplace\nSubmit immunization records to hr2@positiveplace.org\nBy becoming a reading tutor\, you are directly supporting our Club members in their literacy success and making a huge difference in our community. \nPlease contact Volunteer Coordinator Elias Lopez (elopez@positiveplace.org) with any questions.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the film screening of “Sentenced\,” followed by a panel and conversation about the local literacy situation. Panelists include: \n\nDr. Kelly Aramaki\, Bellevue Public Schools Superintendent\nDr. Dwane Chappelle\, City of Seattle Director\, Education and Early Learning\nDr. Jessica Conte\, Principal of Dearborn Park International Elementary School\nRoy Chang\, Founder of School Connect\, WA\nDavid Woodward\, David Woodward Associates\, facilitating international K-20 education services.\n\nGET YOUR TICKETS NOW \n(Seating is limited) \nIn 2022\, alarming statistics revealed that 21% of US adults were functionally illiterate\, with 54% having literacy levels below the sixth grade. The financial impact of low literacy rates is staggering\, costing Americans up to $2.2 trillion annually. \nThese numbers are a call to action\, and we believe Rotarians can make a significant impact. \nJoin us for an exclusive screening of “Sentenced\,” a powerful documentary shedding light on the issue. Following the screening\, engage in an insightful panel discussion with local educators and nonprofits on the front lines of this critical challenge.

SUMMARY:Rotary Litter Pick with We Heart Seattle
DESCRIPTION:Join fellow Rotarians in supporting We Heart Seattle and cleaning up our beautiful city. Park at or near Seattle Elks Lodge\, 3014 3rd Ave. North. The litter is near the bridge and surrounding area. Please look for flaggers and wear layers\, rain gear as needed. Gloves and safety vest supplied. For more details and to sign up visit https://www.facebook.com/events/860107829175117?ref=newsfeed \nWe Heart Seattle is a boots on the ground\, grassroots community effort to promote effective use of city and privately funded resources to make Seattle beautiful and safe for all to enjoy. Cleaning up our parks and downtown is inevitably intertwined with homelessness\, drug addiction\, crime\, gridlocked politics and questionable policy. \nEveryone is welcome. Together we will cultivate a sense of community pride and ownership with a see\, say\, do culture. Seattle is everyone’s back yard to care for. This is a great opportunity to demonstrate Rotary’s commitment to community service above self and to improve the quality of life for people in our community and to serve the public interest. Please wear your Rotary gear with pride demonstrating Rotary in Action.
