The dog days of summer indeed! It also happens to be the same time that our younger generations kick off the new school year, which also coincides with the Rotary theme for September, which is Basic Education and Literacy month.

This past week, an electrifying atmosphere of community and philanthropy enveloped our airwaves, social feeds, and hearts. I am elated to inform you about the launch of the leaderboard for the 2023 “Hunger Strike” fundraiser during a live podcast that captivated audiences far and wide. As the name suggests, the purpose of this noble endeavor is simple yet profound: to fight hunger in Washington state. We had the honor of hosting District Governor Kaj Pedersen and Membership Chair, Tim Leahy, as our special guests. Tim Leahy spoke eloquently about the impact “Hunger Strike” has on Rotary club’s membership.

Rotary Youth Exchange in 5030 is energized and focused on a 100% increase in student exchanges in the 2024-25 Rotary year. At the Youth Exchange Committee meeting on August 26 at Meridian Valley CC in Kent, four new members joined the committee; three Rotarians – Tabitha Claus, Seattle 4; Jesus Lopez-Guisa, Renton Rotary; Zach Griffin,. Sammamish and Shea O’Leary, a future Rotarian and former exchange student .The meeting was enhanced by the attendance of one current year exchange student and one from last year.

Partners for a Malaria-Free Zambia (PMFZ) Year 2 progress report: April 2022 through March 2023

The program’s long-term goals are to reduce cases of malaria, especially severe ones, and to reduce malaria deaths, especially deaths of pregnant women and children under 5 in PMFZ-supported districts. At the end of its second year, the program has reached the goal of training and equipping 2,500 volunteer community health workers to test for malaria and treat, refer, and track the confirmed cases. The participation of Rotary members and an emphasis on data quality are contributing to the successes of the program.

The 2022 Programs of Scale award recipient, Together for Healthy Families in Nigeria , is working to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality rates by 25% in target regions of Nigeria by improving maternal health and access to family planning services while strengthening health systems at the national, state, and local levels. Watch a short video about the program to learn more. Developing a theory of change is part of the Programs of Scale project-planning process. Learn how Together for Healthy Families uses a theory of change to achieve its goals in “What is a theory of change?”

Celebrating one of our Seven Areas of Focus Rotary Clubs can honor Peace (one of our seven areas of focus) by celebrating International Day of Peace on September 21 st . This year’s theme from the United Nations is “Actions for peace: Our ambition for the #GlobalGoals.” Honoring Peace Day can be as simple as planting a Peace Pole in your town and/or having a Day of Peace declared by your local government. In 2014, Rotary International and the Peace Corps joined forces in a global partnership to promote development and volunteer service.

In support of our theme, “Awaken to the Extraordinary Opportunity of Rotary,” we are excited to launch a new pilot program to help our emerging leaders around the district! This supports the vocational aspect of being a Rotarian, where these leadership skills can be applied in Rotary, in our Professions and Personal Lives. This September, we have 18 participants in the RISE (Rotarians Inspired to Succeed and Engage) program who have committed to sharpening their leadership skills. This program was piloted in 2021 by past Rotary International Director, Jerry Hall and Dr. Kent Keith.

2023-2024 Club District Grant Submissions

To: District 5030 Club Presidents Subj: 2023-2024 Club District Grant Submissions As we are starting a new year of 2023-24, our district clubs have the opportunity to submit matching grant requests for their projects. This year, we will have just over $113,000 available to match grants. Unlike global grants, which can be filed any time of the year, district grants’ requests will file with The Rotary Foundation all at one time and usually receive the funds in the November timeframe to start distributing to the approved club grants.
