One of the joys of journeying around the district to meet with fellow Rotarians during club visits are the lessons I have gained from our Rotary legacy over the years. On the occasion of visiting the Lynnwood club, I was presented with a book entitled Lomcevak by Don Bakken, which spoke to Lynnwood Rotary’s sponsorship of the International Air Fair. This title is the Czechoslovakian word for “headache.” An apt title in many ways for describing the annual international event, which was challenging, dramatic, and, when successfully completed, spectacular.

Dear Fellow Rotarians, Last year, our Rotary clubs throughout District 5030 came together in an extraordinary way to combat hunger in our communities. Through unwavering dedication and the incredible power of partnerships and collaboration, we raised enough funds to distribute over 4,000,000 servings of healthy food to children and families who were suffering from hunger and food insecurity. This remarkable achievement demonstrated the undeniable strength that arises when Rotary clubs and community partners unite to address a common cause. This year, we are building upon the success of our Hunger Relief initiative with even greater enthusiasm.

To all of our District 5030 clubs, Rotarians from our district have been building tiny homes at the Hope Factory run by Barb Oliver for the last three years. We have built as a district approximately 36 tiny homes and donated over $80K to the project. Presently we have a standing building date on the 4th Saturday of each month to provide at least 12 volunteers to build one tiny home. Volunteers are instructed to arrive at 9am and usually we are done by 2pm. It’s a perfect way to experience construction of a building without any prior knowledge.

We’ll begin fundraising efforts soon to finance the grants, which will be available specifically to areas affected by the 6.8-magnitude earthquake on 8 September that killed several thousand people, injured even more, and destroyed an estimated 50,000 homes.

The first initial contribution was only $26.50, and it turned into a motion of a power force that has transformed millions of lives around the globe.

As we focus on the future for district 5030, one area of opportunity for our success lies with embracing our vocational legacy. It is a cornerstone of Rotary’s rich legacy that has ultimately underpinned our relevance and value to the communities we serve. In fact, the first initial years of Rotary’s history was driven by business engagement, which fueled its massive growth in those formative years. However, in the US, over the years this aspect of our service has dwindled in interest amongst our members with the reality that our connection to the business and professional world has slipped.
