Major Donor Event – District Conference, Victoria Oct-2023 This month finds me writing to you just two weeks after our first district conference in four years, where we were able to gather and Awaken to the Extraordinary Opportunity of Rotary in Victoria. The conference committee did an outstanding job of creating an experience, where we came together to learn, connect, build relationships, and engage in exploring the possibilities of how our Rotary clubs can impact the communities they serve.

Historical conference · April 16–19, 2026 A Message from Director Dan Himelspach The 2023 Zones 26 & 27 (Big West) Institute is quickly approaching and we have an exciting line-up of presenters to motivate and inspire as you Create Hope in the World this Rotary year, including: Rotary International President Elect Stephanie Urchick will be the second woman to serve as RI President. She has held many Rotary roles, including Chair of the RI Strategic Planning Committee. She was instrumental in development of the People of Action Program and holds a doctorate in leadership studies from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

We are pleased to announce that Raymond Connell, has been selected as our DGND by the nominating committee. Raymond is a lawyer and the Jamaican Honorary Consul to Seattle. He was also the president of University District Rotary Club. Raymond comes with valuable life experiences that will help him focus on areas to diversify our membership, develop the role of AGs to support leadership development in support of our clubs, expand our storytelling to increase membership and support the magic of our Rotary Foundation to increase our clubs support for its funding across the district.

We held our first business district meeting within three years at the District Conference in Victoria on the 14th October. This business meeting was also a first in that it was a hybrid meeting that allowed us to include club representatives who were unable to attend the conference. The hybrid approach was a success as we bought together all our representatives to discuss and vote on a full agenda. At the meeting the following items were discussed and passed by the clubs: We will implementing a new approach to support our district projects.

The Rotary Club of Issaquah is beaming with pride following the phenomenal success of their fundraising endeavors at Salmon Days in Issaquah! This year’s celebration was truly special, and the dedicated Rotarians and volunteers made it even more extraordinary through their tireless efforts. In partnership with Trail Youth Coffee, they held a coffee stand selling hot & cold coffee, Italian sodas and tea. The energy and enthusiasm displayed by the 33 Issaquah Rotarians, along with the invaluable support of 4 Rotarian spouses, a volunteer from Sammamish Rotary and Scout Troop 677, were awe-inspiring.

When life is interrupted because an appliance is not working, the cost and inconvenience of replacement can be overwhelming and paralyzing. Bellevue Sunrise Rotary Club established the Neighborhood Appliance Replacement Program in 2017 to support families in need. This ongoing program serves local families in Bellevue and Renton that cannot afford to replace a broken appliance, such as a stove, dishwasher, refrigerator or other essential appliance.

Music4Life has been an Official Rotary District 5030 Project for the past two years and an Official Rotary District Project that has been renewed five previous times since becoming an Official Rotary district Project in 2010. From its founding in 2007, the purpose of Music4Life has been to provide donated-and-repaired musical instruments at no charge for use by the students of families in-need. This is accomplished thru local Chapters that are public school district-based.

Develop Meaning through Interact Developing meaning and purpose in life can be especially important for teens, as they are at a stage where they are beginning to form their own identities and consider their goals and values. Here are a few ideas for helping teens develop meaning in their lives: Encourage involvement in activities that align with their interests and values: Encourage teens to get involved in activities that are meaningful to them and align with their interests and values. This could be through volunteering, participating in sports or other extracurricular activities, or pursuing a hobby.

It is hard to imagine that our last conference was four years ago, and you can imagine that the effort to pull this event together after such a long absence had its challenges. Challenges that the conference committee embraced to ensure that we brought together thought leaders, programs, and an opportunity to experience Victoria, while based at the Empress Hotel. Many of participants reflected that they had an amazing time reconnecting with each other, while awakening the extraordinary possibilities of Rotary.
