Rotary Peace Building and Conflict Resolution Month

February is Rotary Peacebuilding and Conflict Resolution Month. According to Rotary International, today, over 70 million people are displaced because of conflict, violence, persecution, and human rights. Half of this number are children. As Rotarians, Promoting Peace is one of our seven areas of focus. While the idea of promoting peace may seem like a large and unattainable aspiration, I assure you that the work you do every day has a positive affect in the world. Our district has actively created and supported service projects in our local community and around the globe.

May the luck o’ the Irish be with you on Saturday, March 15, when we welcome Sylvia O’Stayformore back as Rainbow Bingo emcee at the West Seattle Golf Course. This fundraiser is a major source of funds for Rotary Club of West Seattle’s work providing scholarships for young adults, new school supplies and clothing for local youth, clean stoves in Guatemala, and much more! Like last time, tickets will be $40 each and tables (8 seats) are $300.

Los Angeles Wildfires: ShelterBox USA and Rotary District 5280 Step Up for Evacuees

Los Angeles is once again under siege by wildfires, with the Palisades, Eaton, Hurst, and Lidia fires marking some of the most destructive in the city’s history. Over 180,000 people have been forced to evacuate as the flames consumed thousands of homes, leaving devastation in their wake. Amid this crisis, ShelterBox USA, in collaboration with Rotary District 5280, has stepped up to provide critical relief for displaced families. At the Pasadena Convention Center, where many evacuees have sought refuge, ShelterBox USA has been distributing essential supplies, including thermal blankets, solar lights, and personal bags to those in need.

Rotary International Council on Legislation: Open Forums to Review & Discuss Pending Enactments

Council on Legislation Proposals We are in the midst of Rotary International’s Council on Legislation (COL) season. This once-every-three-years assembly considers enactments to Rotary’s Constitution, Bylaws and Manual of Procedure. In April, the COL will be voting on enactments involving membership, Club administration, Rotaract, qualifications for various positions, and many other topics. Proposed Enactment 25-07, for example, would lower the minimum number of new members needed to charter a new club from 20 to at least 15.

Our dynamic Rotary District 5030 Environmental Sustainability Committee is very active this year and invites Rotarians to participate in a hands-on environmental project on Saturday, April 19, from 9 AM to 1 PM . We will be working on the banks of Seattle’s primary urban river, the Duwamish River , removing invasive species and planting indigenous trees and shrubs. This is a District-wide project , and we need 40 volunteers to join us.

Rotary Club of Seattle (Seattle #4) one of the larger and more influential Rotary Clubs in the world, recently convened at The Rainier Club to hear from three remarkable finalists for this year’s Seattle Rotary Service Foundation (SRSF) $75,000 Large Local Grant . The finalists— Operation Nightwatch, Uplift NW, and PDA/Third Avenue Project/We Deliver Care —each presented compelling cases for funding, highlighting their essential work supporting some of Seattle’s most vulnerable populations.

Dear Members, Families and Friends, Our current community situation needs your help in the form of more blood donations. Thank you for those who have already donated in January: 39 Rotarians! Three of those donors gave platelets, while 36 gave whole blood. See the message below from Bloodworks NW. Bloodworks Northwest is declaring a Code Red emergency blood shortage. Blood donors are urgently needed to combat a severe shortage: less than half of the donors needed in February have signed up to give.
