District Conference in Victoria – 13th to 15th October, 2023

It is hard to imagine that our last conference was four years ago, and you can imagine that the effort to pull this event together after such a long absence had its challenges.  Challenges that the conference committee embraced to ensure that we brought together thought leaders, programs, and an opportunity to experience Victoria, while based at the Empress Hotel.  Many of participants reflected that they had an amazing time reconnecting with each other, while awakening the extraordinary possibilities of Rotary.

Our conference embraced a number of changes to support a wide range of programs, where we had speakers sharing their stories in person or remotely via Victoria Conference Center’s state-of-the art video conferencing. This was a hybrid experience that allowed us to bring a strong bench of speakers not normally accessible to us because of their geographic locations.

Our first conference in four years was a time where we came together to learn, connect, build relationships, and engage in rewriting the story of our district again.  We did Awaken to the Extraordinary Opportunity of Rotary together and dream of the possibilities that we have ahead of us within 5030.  Victoria was the best place for us to dream of these possibilities, as we enjoyed the bounties of the location through its restaurants, services, and culture that helped to bring a more engaging experience for our conference attendees. The Empress Hotel did not disappoint with its improved facilities and legacy of service that we all benefitted from while in Victoria.

Our photographer was able to capture many of the moments during the conference, which you can see by clicking here.

On the last day for the conference, I had the opportunity to share with the audience some personal observations during our time in Victoria that I hope will resonate with you:

  • People are the difference:  The thrill of seeing people come together around a common goal is hard to beat.  It comes from being able to communicate at much higher levels than is usual, as we strive to find common ground upon which we can rally together and execute on with success.  We must seek comfort from each other’s ideas and approaches to solving the challenges of Rotary’s vision to unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.  We must each make a sacrifice in service to the bigger opportunity, while delivering an impact beyond our individual contributions as a result.
  • Without history there is no context: History is just that, history. But it sure can provide context—and inspiration.  Even as we see that life goes on, history can provide an anchor so that we don’t forget. It’s not about how strong we are—but just the opposite. We see how fragile life can really be. And that brings a dose of humility—and also of hope. And only history can provide that context.
  • Embrace ambiguity: We all remember when a few Rotarians were trying to convince our clubs to switch to Zoom, instead of holding in-person meetings all over district 5030.  The logistics, prior to Zoom, were a nightmare as we tried to organize meeting rooms and secure attendees for the meetings.  The excuses for not adopting Zoom were plentiful and ranged from “I’m too old to learn something new” to “it is expensive to set up” as examples.  But when the pandemic struck, that goal was accomplished in a matter of weeks across the district. After all, it takes courage to challenge old ways of thinking and a willingness to embrace ambiguity.
  • Impacting lives meaningfully: Rotary’s core essence is service to others. Joining Bellevue Breakfast Club introduced me to a network of passionate individuals committed to making a positive impact locally and globally. Collaborating on projects like the All in for Autism 5/10K run, packing food at the distribution center operated by Harvest Against Hunger, planting trees in the local park, and assisting with the Adoption parties to help place children in their forever homers allowed me to leave a meaningful mark that extended far beyond corporate balance sheets.
  • Building Bonds and Forging Relationships: In Rotary, I found like-minded professionals who shared my values and dedication to service. I formed connections with people from diverse backgrounds and industries, whose experiences surpassed my own. These connections not only expanded my personal and professional network but also provided unwavering support and a platform for collaboration. Working with my fellow club members brought camaraderie, opened doors, and led to opportunities while adding an element of enjoyment to it all.
  • Nurturing Leadership Acumen: Engaging in Rotary projects honed my leadership skills. As I collaborated with others to plan and execute community and international initiatives, I grew in project management, teamwork, and decision-making abilities. My club provided ample opportunities for personal growth, mentorship, and leadership development that also benefited my career.
  • Embracing a Global Outlook:  Rotary’s international focus can broaden our horizons and offer a global perspective. Through participating in international projects, exchanges, and conferences, we will be exposed to diverse cultures, broaden our understanding of global issues, and cultivate a global mindset. This exposure will enrich both our personal life and professional prowess, bring a balance that will help us remain adaptable professionals in our interconnected world.

During our time in Victoria, my sincerest hope is that we have collectively Awakened to the Extraordinary Opportunity of Rotary and see the possibilities of changing “again and again” to ensure we can make the difference we want to see within our communities.  It is the impact of your clubs’ service to their communities that will attract people seeking meaning in their lives – in doing so, we will Create Hope in the World.
