Duwamish River Restoration Project

Our dynamic Rotary District 5030 Environmental Sustainability Committee is very active this year and invites Rotarians to participate in a hands-on environmental project on Saturday, April 19, from 9 AM to 1 PM.

We will be working on the banks of Seattle’s primary urban river, the Duwamish River, removing invasive species and planting indigenous trees and shrubs. This is a District-wide project, and we need 40 volunteers to join us.

The event will begin at 9 AM with a special presentation by George Blumberg, historian with the Port of Seattle, who will provide an update on the major cleanup efforts coordinated by the EPA as a Superfund site. Additionally, a representative from the Duwamish Tribe will share insights on the native history of the river, which dates back 10,000 years.

We will provide coffee and donuts in the morning, followed by a vegetarian lunch around noon. The hands-on work will take approximately 2–3 hours.

If you’re interested in participating, please contact Dave Spicer at the email below. Spots are limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, so we encourage you to sign up quickly!

What to Bring:

  • Waterproof boots suitable for working in mud
  • Work gloves
  • Water bottle

All tools will be provided, and a portable restroom will be available on-site.

This is a meaningful opportunity to make a tangible impact on our environment, and we hope you will join us!
