HANWASH in Haiti – Addressing the Turmoil in Haiti.

District (5130) is championing the efforts of HANWASH in Haiti. With all the turmoil in Port-au-Prince, a call has been received from Haiti letting us know that not all of Haiti is entangled in the turmoil and violence. HANWASH is moving forward in Leogane, and the influx of people moving away from the capital has placed an extra dimension on the urgency of the program. The model and work attributed to the HANWASH project can have a great impact on people around the world, but the initial program development needs support in Haiti.

The DG from 5130 sent a message to all of the Governors in the Big West asking them to pass along the urgency to their district’s to visit HANWASH.org and consider supporting this humanitarian Rotary effort.

We received the following from a member of the HANWASH team in Leogane, Haiti.

I hope this message finds you well. I am reaching out to bring your attention to the urgent humanitarian situation in Haiti, specifically in the city of Leogane. Following recent security issues, the population of Leogane has significantly increased due to an influx of refugees from Port-au-Prince and the surrounding areas. This has put immense pressure on the already limited resources, food and infrastructure of the city. Our main concern revolves around water, sanitation, and hygiene. Currently, we are working on a global grant for the water system in Leogane, aiming to make it a hybrid system using solar power and diesel fuel generators. This will help address the critical needs of the growing population and ensure access to safe water. The water department is in need of funding to maintain the generator running for the next 12 months. We firmly believe that immediate action is necessary to alleviate the suffering and improve the living conditions of those affected.

With your support, we can make a significant impact on the lives of countless individuals who are currently facing dire circumstances and life-threatening problems.

Thank you for your consideration.

The lead for this project is Dan Balfe
