With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of John Enger, a beloved member of the Rotary Club of West Seattle and a distinguished Past District Governor of Rotary District 5030. Serving as District Governor from July 2014 to June 2015, John was a dedicated Rotarian whose contributions and leadership left an indelible mark on our community.
Throughout his many years of service, John also held the role of Assistant Governor, where his guidance and support were invaluable to countless Rotarians and clubs within the district. His commitment to the Rotary mission of “Service Above Self” was evident in every aspect of his work and life.
John’s professional career was as remarkable as his Rotary service. He was the retired Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President of Banana Pages, a leading independent yellow page publisher with directories in Washington and Oregon. From 1971 to 2006, he co-owned and helped shape the company into a pioneering force in the industry. Notably, he was instrumental in developing the industry’s first true online yellow pages, which led to the sale of Yellow Pages Internet to InfoSpace in 1997 and the sale of Neighborhood Telephone Directories, Inc. in 1998.
A proud alumnus of Roosevelt High School in Seattle, WA, John went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Communications from the University of Washington (1967 – 1971). His educational background laid the foundation for a successful and impactful career in communications and business.
John will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the entire Rotary community. His legacy of leadership, innovation, and service will continue to inspire us all.
