Our Rotary Journey Continues: Emerging Leaders Step Forward

Rotary’s Emerging Rotary Leaders (ERL) program, held October 22–25 at the Clyde Hotel in Albuquerque, brought together passionate Rotarians from Zones 26 and 27 for several days of inspiration, collaboration, and leadership growth under the theme:
“Our Rotary Journey Continues: Embracing Our Legacy, Empowering Our Future.”

The multi-day agenda combined visionary discussions, skill-building sessions, and meaningful fellowship designed to prepare future leaders to serve their clubs, districts, and communities with renewed purpose.

Igniting Leadership on Day One

The program opened Wednesday afternoon with an energizing ERL session that set the tone for the days ahead. Following the session, participants gathered for a Welcome Reception in the Clyde Hotel’s 2nd Floor Atrium, where connections were made and ideas began to spark.

“The Emerging Rotary Leaders program reignited my passion for service,” shared Stacie Thorlakson, Eastside Action Rotary Club President and D5030 Public Image Co-Chair. “It opened new friendships, inspired collaboration with other clubs, and sparked fresh ideas to enhance our impact in the community. The path is endless — let’s all unite for good!”

Deep Dives and Discovery

Thursday’s sessions were packed with exploration and exchange of ideas. “Ideas Worth Exploring” — a TED-style showcase of innovative Rotary projects — encouraged participants to think creatively about service and sustainability. A Senior Leaders Panel followed, offering valuable insights from experienced Rotarians who emphasized mentorship, collaboration, and continuity of leadership.

“The Emerging Rotary Leaders seminar was a powerful reminder that leadership in Rotary is about inspiring others to act with purpose,” said Jemal Idris, District Assistant Governor, Area 16. “As a member of the Governor Line, I was encouraged by the passion and innovative spirit of future leaders across the Zone.”

From Inspiration to Impact

Friday’s sessions expanded Rotary’s global vision, featuring themes such as “From Inspiration to Impact” and “Peace in a Divided World.” Participants reflected on the power of Rotary to create understanding and unity across cultures.

The day concluded with a World Polio Day event at Civic Plaza and an ERL Friendship Dinner, celebrating collaboration and shared service.

“There is so much more to Rotary, as an organization and a community, outside of your own Club,” said Stephen W. Morse, District Membership Chair and member of Seattle 4.
“These conferences expand your perspective and vision — and you meet the best people along the way. This was an incredible Zone Institute!”

Celebrating the Journey

Saturday marked the final day, highlighted by the Senior Leader ForumClosing Session with DGs and DGEs, and the Dinner & Gala Celebration. The evening culminated in music, laughter, and reflection as emerging and seasoned leaders celebrated their shared Rotary spirit and commitment to “Service Above Self.”

“I had the wonderful opportunity to attend ERL again, having first experienced it in Salt Lake City a few years ago,” shared Patricia Chapman, D5030 District Governor Elect (2026–27). “It helped chart my path to becoming District Governor and strengthened my connections with past and current DGs. The experience made me a better AG, facilitator, and friend — building lasting relationships across several districts.”

“We are a leadership organization, and we do service,” said Julie Kang of Seattle 4. She stressed the need to grow the next generation of leaders by connecting with high school students through Interact, college students through Rotaract, and offering hands-on service with partners like the Boys and Girls Club.

Carrying the Torch Forward

As the ERL program concluded, participants departed not just with notebooks full of ideas, but with hearts full of renewed commitment. The shared experiences of learning, laughter, and leadership underscored Rotary’s timeless message:Together, we can continue the journey — embracing our legacy and empowering our future.

“The 2025 Rotary International Zone 26 & 27 Institute provided inspiration, education, and fellowship this past week in Albuquerque,” shared Jeff Borek, District Governor. “I hope Rotarians across District 5030 take advantage of similar opportunities — like our upcoming District Conference in Walla Walla, WA. It’s an affordable way to have a great time joining over 300 fellow Rotarians from around the greater Seattle area.”  Learn more and register at igniterotary2026.com.
