A Year of Inspiration: Reflecting on the Magic of Rotary with DG Rachele Bouchand

As this Rotary year draws to a close, District Governor Rachele Bouchand reflects on a term filled with passion, purpose, and powerful storytelling. With a vision focused on expanding Rotary’s reach to young professionals, DG Rachele encouraged members to share their personal journeys—the “why” behind their Rotary story.

“Rotary is full of magic—but our members are the real magic,” said Rachele. “When we share our stories, we connect on a deeper level. We inspire action. We build community.”

Living the Magic of Rotary

This year’s Rotary theme—The Magic of Rotary—was more than a motto. It became a movement. Members shared stories of transformation, service, and connection. They celebrated friendship and found strength in service.

“We changed lives. We supported each other through life’s transitions. We grew, professionally and personally. And we found joy in doing good,” she added.

RISE-ing to New Heights

One of the hallmark accomplishments this year was the launch of RISE: Rotarians Inspired to Succeed and Engage—a leadership development program chaired by Lisa Edwards. RISE graduates are stepping into club and district leadership, bringing fresh energy and a growth mindset to Rotary.

“RISE isn’t just about leadership in Rotary—it’s about leadership in life,” said Rachele. “We’re investing in the next generation of changemakers.”

Projects that Moved the World

From local neighborhoods to global health, District 5030 Rotarians made an impact:

  • Partners for a Malaria-Free Zambia, Rotary’s first Program of Scale, brought together $6 million in funding from Rotary International, the Gates Foundation, and World Vision to dramatically reduce malaria in 10 districts.

  • Lynnwood Neighborhood Center broke ground—promising a vital space for families, education, health services, and community programs, alongside a new inclusive playground.

  • Environmental Rotary Club’s Miyawaki Forest in Shoreline planted a dense, biodiverse urban forest, showcasing sustainability and environmental stewardship in action.

And that’s just the beginning. District 5030 once again sponsored more global grants than any district in the world—a testament to the bold generosity and vision of our members.

Powerful Partnerships for Peace and Health

District 5030 remained deeply engaged with Rotary International’s global efforts, especially in Polio Plus. Ezra Teshome continues to lead advocacy and awareness, with annual gatherings at the Gates Foundation that underscore our commitment to a polio-free world.

We’re also proud to be a Peacebuilder District, helping sponsor Rotary Peace Fellows—equipping future peace leaders to tackle complex global challenges.

Membership Momentum

In a time when many service organizations are struggling, District 5030 saw modest growth and expanding diversity. Clubs found success by asking potential members what they wanted from Rotary—and listening.

“We’re seeing clubs evolve—offering more hands-on service, flexible meeting formats, and intentional inclusion. Most of all, we’re building real relationships,” Rachele said.

Overcoming Challenges with Heart

Like many clubs across North America, membership sustainability remains a challenge. But District 5030 is tackling it with innovation and heart—doubling down on connection, mentorship, and leadership development.

“Watch the documentary Join or Die. It shows how critical it is to belong—and Rotary is a place where belonging changes everything,” Rachele encouraged.

A Lesson in Leadership

When asked what she learned, Rachele responded with gratitude:

“Our district is bursting with talent and heart. My advice to future leaders? Reach beyond your club. Dream big. You may not have all the answers—but together, we can solve anything.”

Looking Ahead

Rachele sees enormous opportunity in strengthening the pathway between Interact, Rotaract, and Rotary.

“We’re one Rotary family. There’s so much untapped energy and creativity in the next generation,” she noted. “Let’s build bridges.”

In a Word: Inspiring

If she had to sum up the year in a single word?

“Inspiring. I expected to work hard—but I didn’t expect to grow so much. Our members inspired me every day. I am truly grateful.”

Parting Words of Wisdom

Rachele leaves us with two of her favorite quotes—words that encapsulate the heart of her leadership:

“Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.”– Desmond Tutu
“I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something.” – Edward Everett Hale

Thank you, Rachele, for your leadership, warmth, and unwavering belief in the power of Rotary…it’s truly been a magical year!
