It’s time to select a Rotarian for one of the most meaningful positions in District 5030, that of District Governor.
Who might consider this opportunity?
- A past club president, who served a full term as president in 2024-25 or before, and a Rotarian in good standing. Or a person who served as a charter president of a club, having served from the date of charter to the end of that Rotary year.
- A past president who feels he or she can provide the leadership to support the clubs and club presidents in District 5030.
- A Rotarian who is willing and able to commit to this position and has the physical ability to fulfill the responsibilities of the position. Please note, our past governors have remained fully active in their professions, or been retired, or reduced their professional workloads. All possibilities can work for the individual.
What are the responsibilities of a District Governor?
Past presidents who have served as Assistant Governors, members of District Committees (including the District Foundation Committee), District Trainers, and others who have been very active beyond the club have a good sense of the opportunities and responsibilities of the District Governor. That said, here are some highlights about the role and responsibilities.
- Act as a Servant Leader.
- Support club presidents and clubs in their service and membership endeavors.
- Support continuity in District 5030, working with predecessors and successors.
- Motivate all Rotarians in the District.
- Delegate, appoint, provide training, and support the District Team (i.e., Assistant Governors, the Foundation Committee, the Membership team, the District Trainer, and more). In so doing, develop the leadership of these Rotarians for future opportunities.
- Recognize and acknowledge individuals and clubs for their accomplishments.
- Promote support of The Rotary Foundation and membership growth.
An interested Rotarian may find a more detailed description of the District Governor duties in Section 16.090 of the RI By-laws within the 2016 Rotary Manual of Procedure.
Time Frame and Process, between now and September 15, 2025:
- Club President will announce this opportunity at least twice to your club over the next few weeks. We expect they will publish this announcement and application form in your club newsletter.
- We will also e-mail this announcement & application form to all members and past club presidents.
- An interested Past President completes the 2028-29 Governor-nominee Designate Form and the Rotary & Leadership Resume form (include your resume). The candidate then gives the completed material to the Club President. These forms are available on DACdb under District Files (Home District 5030 Admin DG 2028-29 Nomination Process).
- If an individual steps forward with a completed application, their club must consider it and take action to approve it. A club may nominate only one of its members. The club adopts a Resolution of Nomination, naming the candidate at a regular club meeting. Note: a club may nominate a person from another club, which most often occurs when more than one qualified candidate steps forward in another club.
- The Club President, then attests to the individual’s qualifications (Governor Designee Statement of Qualifications 28.29), certified by your Club Secretary, along with the completed DGND Data Form 28.29/ Application (Rotary and Leadership Resume 28.29). Send all to PDG Kaj Pedersen KajOPP@gmail.com no later than September 15, 2025. The forms are available via the links to DACdb, or you can go directly to DACdb District Folder District 5030 Admin/DG 2028-29 Nomination Process where all files are available for use.
The Interview process:
A committee of four Past District Governors and three past club presidents will interview all qualified applicants submitted by the clubs. We are planning interviews to be held on 22nd September 2025.
If you are a Past President who wants to know more before applying?
You are welcome and encouraged to ask the current District Governor, the 2026-27 District Governor- Elect, and 2027-28 District Governor Nominee, as well as Past Governors who are not on the Governor Nominating Committee.
When selected, the Rotarian will receive dedicated training by Rotary International at the Zone Institute prior to the DG-Nominee year (GNTS), and further training at the Governor-elect Training Seminar (GETS) to ensure your success as District Governor.
The Rotarians and Rotary Clubs in District 5030 provide great service to our local communities and the world. Men, women, children, youth and entire communities benefit from their work. They provide respected leaders. They provide opportunities for friendship and personal growth. To be the District Governor of District 5030 and the motivational leader of its Rotarians is a wonderful opportunity. I hope you will encourage your clubs’ past leaders to consider this life-changing experience.
Yours in Rotary,
Kaj Pedersen – Rotary Club of Bellevue Breakfast and Past Governor 2023-24
