Giddyup Wranglers!
As a first-time attendee at the Rotary International Convention, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I had heard stories—global connections, inspiring speakers, and an overwhelming sense of shared purpose—but nothing could have fully prepared me for the energy and scale of the event in Calgary. OOHAY! 🙂
From the moment I stepped into the BMO Centre, I felt the buzz of thousands of Rotarians from all corners of the globe. The convention wasn’t just a meeting—it was a movement. Flags waved, hugs were exchanged between longtime friends, and strangers became instant allies in service. It truly felt like the “Olympics of Rotary.”
One of the most powerful moments for me was the opening ceremony at the Calgary Saddledome. As Rotary leaders, humanitarian champions, and a few surprise celebrities took the stage, I was struck by the deep interconnectedness of our mission. Whether we’re eradicating polio, promoting peace, or empowering youth, Rotarians around the world are united by a shared commitment to creating lasting change.
The House of Friendship quickly became one of my favorite spots—imagine a buzzing marketplace filled with Rotary Fellowships, global projects, vendors, and passionate Rotarians eager to share their stories. I discovered causes I had never heard of, exchanged club flags and shirts, and collected a dozen ideas I can’t wait to bring back to my club. I even joined two fellowships: the International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians (IYFR) and the Rotary Wine Appreciation Fellowship (RWAF)!
Beyond the convention, Calgary was a phenomenal host city—friendly, walkable, and simply stunning at night with a skyline that sparkled under twinkly lights. Locals greeted us with warmth, and the service—complete with signature cocktails and regional dishes—was nothing short of five-star.
A truly memorable highlight was a special District 5030 gathering hosted by Cathy Gibson, Virginia McKenzie, Martha Sidio, Roma Nicole Seal, and Ruth Ann Halford. It was a beautiful opportunity to connect with fellow Rotarians and share the Calgary experience. We heard heartfelt words from outgoing District Governor Rachele Bouchand, who reflected on her term, and incoming DG Jeff Borek, who got us excited for the April 2026 District Conference in Walla Walla. Both shared a powerful message:
“Thank you for being Rotarians. It’s people like you who make our roles easier.”
Now, let’s take that Magic of Rotary and channel it into this year’s call to action: Unite for Good.
If you’ve ever wondered whether attending a Rotary International Convention is worth it—take it from this first-timer: it absolutely is. I left Calgary with a deeper sense of purpose, a longer contact list, and a heart full of Rotary spirit.
