Later this month, our club will have the extraordinary opportunity to welcome two inspiring international guests whose story connects Vashon Island to a thriving community on the outskirts of Kampala, Uganda.
Henry Tumwebaze and Judith Abenawe, the founders and leaders of Vashon Primary School, will be visiting Vashon in mid-July and joining us at our July 17 Rotary meeting. Newly inducted into Rotary in Uganda, Henry and Judith exemplify Rotary’s values in action: service, community empowerment, and sustainable education.
Their school—named after Vashon Island—was born out of a 2011 visit and conversation with Vashon residents Linda Barnes and the late Ed Swan. That moment of connection sparked a vision that became reality when the school officially opened in 2014. Today, it serves over 300 students, offering nursery through Primary Seven education in a setting that is independent, non-religious, affordable, and inclusive.
Vashon Primary School stands out in Uganda for its community-based model, including a bartering system that allows families to pay tuition with produce, labor, or goods. It also provides vital health services to students and local families, helping to address broader community needs.
In March 2023 and again in April 2024, The Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber featured the school, highlighting its impact and the strong ties between our two communities. The articles praised not only the innovation and resilience of the school, but also the heart and leadership of Henry and Judith, who live on the school grounds and serve as daily stewards of its mission.
We’re deeply honored that Henry and Judith will join us to share their story, their Rotary journey, and the future they envision for their students. Their visit reminds us that Rotary’s reach is truly global—and that meaningful connections often begin with something as simple as a conversation.
Please make a special effort to attend our July 17 meeting to extend a warm Vashon Rotary welcome and hear firsthand from two individuals who are changing lives through education and service.
