Julie Hungar has been a member of the Rotary International club since 1985, yes, 40 years in Rotary. Julie worked tirelessly for women to be officially allowed to be accepted into Rotary; Hence, the Supreme Court’s decision,1987, to allow women to be Charter members in Rotary. It was a bitter fight against gender based memberships. The 1989 Council on Legislation vote to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide remains a watershed moment in the history of Rotary.
THANK YOU JULIE
I had lunch today with Julie and learned so much about her life. She was born and raised in Bismarck, North Dakota. At age 10, her family moved to Bremerton. The war had started and her father worked at the military base. After the war, they moved to Mount Vernon where she went to Mount Vernon high school. Julie‘s mother insisted she have speech lessons and Julie immediately began working at the radio station in downtown Mount Vernon, KBRC, while in HS. She became the news editor for the station. In high school, she interviewed the football coach/math teacher who eventually became her husband. Julie attended University of Washington and graduated in English literature. Gordon, her husband to be, followed her to University of Washington. He went to Dental school and she worked at the University of Washington’s radio station from noon to 9 PM. Gordon and Julie had four children.
Fast forward , Gordon was invited to join Lake Forest Park Rotary by Ben Cashman. Meanwhile, Julie was invited to join the Rotary International Club. At age 90, Julie was voted to be President of her club. Julie is still a member of the International club and continues to promote and love Rotary for 40 years! Now that’s SERVICE ABOVE SELF…
We all have a Rotary story! Tell your story every chance you get!
Let’s not keep ROTARY a secret…
