There is an old saying that people join organizations for a purpose, but they stay because of the people.
That simple truth was on full display at the Rotary International Convention in Taipei.
Yes, there were inspiring keynote speakers, thought-provoking breakout sessions, and opportunities to learn about incredible projects taking place around the world. But ask anyone from District 5030 what they will remember most, and chances are it won’t be a presentation.
It will be the laughter shared over dinner. The conversations that lasted long after the sessions ended. The friendships renewed with Rotarians from across our district and around the globe. The spontaneous reunions, the selfies, the fellowship, and the unmistakable feeling that we belong to something much larger than ourselves.
That is the real power of Rotary.
Research consistently shows that people crave connection. We are wired to belong. When people experience authentic relationships built on trust and shared experiences, they become invested, not only in the mission, but in each other. That investment creates what leadership experts call discretionary energy: the willingness to contribute more than what is required because people genuinely want to.
Rotary thrives on this principle.
Our service projects matter. Our grants matter. Our impact in communities’ matters. But the catalyst behind all of those achievements is human connection.
When members feel connected, they attend more meetings. They volunteer more often. They invite prospective members. They step into leadership. They become ambassadors for Rotary because Rotary has become meaningful in their own lives.
The Taipei Convention reminded us that fellowship isn’t simply a pleasant byproduct of Rotary. It is one of its greatest strengths. It is the fuel that energizes our clubs and our district.
As District 5030 continues to focus on growing membership and strengthening engagement, perhaps our most important question isn’t simply, “How do we recruit more members?”
Instead, we should ask, “How do we create more opportunities for members to connect?”
Whether it’s a club fellowship event, a district conference, a service project, a Mariners game, a training event, or an international convention, every shared experience strengthens the relationships that keep Rotary vibrant.
People come for many reasons, but they remain because they find friendship, purpose, and a community that celebrates one another.
The extraordinary opportunity before us is to continue creating those moments of connection.
Because when people feel connected, they become engaged.
And when Rotarians are engaged, there is no limit to what District 5030 can accomplish together.
