On May 15th, the Kent Community Foundation and its partners hosted their annual Scholarship Awards Celebration at Kent Covenant Church—an inspiring evening of recognition, gratitude, and hope for the future. The event brought together over 150 community members, families, and educators to honor 37 deserving students from the Kent School District and recent graduates.
The Rotary Club of Kent played a leading role in this year’s event, contributing $46,000 of the $131,000 total in scholarships awarded. Through a shared commitment to service and education, Kent Rotary continues to empower the next generation of leaders and changemakers.
Twenty-four of the student recipients attended in person to receive their scholarships and share their future plans. Their aspirations ranged from pursuing degrees in education, STEM, business, and the arts to continuing work in community service and civic engagement—values closely aligned with Rotary’s mission.
The program also featured powerful reflections from past scholarship recipients, including Ashley Duncan, the first Linda Ruby Scholarship awardee in 2003. Her message served as a testament to the lasting impact of community support on a young person’s journey.
Representatives from the Kent Community Foundation and the Kent School District, including Vice President Cathy Wahlin and Dr. Wade Barringer, celebrated the legacy of local scholarship founders like Ina Balash, whose vision continues to shape the lives of students in Kent.
This event is a shining example of what can be accomplished when Rotary clubs collaborate with local nonprofits and educational partners. The Kent Rotary Club’s long-standing partnership with the Kent Community Foundation reflects Rotary’s deep commitment to youth service, education, and community development.
As Rotarians, we are reminded that scholarships are more than financial assistance—they are investments in potential, expressions of belief, and acts of hope.
