Investing in the Future Through Youth Service

May is Youth Service Month in Rotary — a time to recognize that some of the most important work we do is not simply for today, but for the generations that follow us.

Across District 5030 and around the world, Rotarians are mentoring young leaders, supporting students, creating opportunities for service, and helping young people discover that they have the power to create meaningful change in their communities. Whether through Interact, Rotaract, RYLA, Youth Exchange, scholarships, mentoring, or local service projects, Rotary continues to shape lives in ways that often extend far beyond what we may ever personally see.

Youth Service is more than a program category. It is an investment in leadership, compassion, civic responsibility, and hope.

Today’s younger generations are looking for more than organizations to join — they are looking for purpose, authenticity, impact, and connection. In many ways, Rotary’s foundational principles align perfectly with what young people value most: community engagement, ethical leadership, collaboration, and the opportunity to make a real difference.

This presents Rotary with an extraordinary opportunity.

When we invite young people into service, we are not simply asking them to help continue Rotary’s legacy. We are giving them the chance to help redefine and strengthen Rotary for the future. Their ideas, perspectives, creativity, and energy are essential as we continue evolving to meet the needs of a changing world.

Throughout our district, clubs are already leading the way by creating stronger relationships with schools, supporting youth-driven initiatives, partnering with community organizations, and finding innovative ways to engage younger professionals and families in service. These efforts matter. They help ensure that Rotary remains vibrant, relevant, and impactful for decades to come.

Youth Service also reminds us of something deeply important: leadership is learned through experience. Many of Rotary’s current leaders first discovered service as young people who were encouraged, supported, and trusted with responsibility. A single mentor, opportunity, or invitation can change the trajectory of someone’s life.

As Rotarians, we have the privilege of helping create those moments.

This month, I encourage every club and every member to think about how we can further strengthen our commitment to Youth Service. Invite young leaders to participate. Support local youth programs. Partner with schools and community organizations. Encourage mentorship. Listen to younger voices. Most importantly, continue creating opportunities for young people to lead alongside us — not someday, but today.

The future of Rotary is not something waiting in the distance. It is already sitting in our classrooms, volunteering at our events, participating in our Interact and Rotaract clubs, and searching for ways to make a difference.

Let’s continue opening the door.
