October is Economic and Community Development Month, a time to reflect on Rotary’s founding principles — and how we continue to live them today. When Paul Harris and his colleagues first gathered in 1905, they envisioned more than fellowship. They saw an opportunity to unite ethical business leaders who believed that success and service could go hand in hand. Rotary was born from that conviction — that our vocations can uplift our communities and that honest business can be a force for good.
More than a century later, that belief is once again at the center of who we are. Across the world, communities and consumers are seeking connection with purpose-driven businesses — and Rotary is uniquely positioned to bridge that gap.
The Impact Marketplace: Doing Business for Good
A few years ago, District 5030 implemented the Impact Marketplace, also known as the District 5030 Business Network, to give Rotarian and local business owners a way to connect commerce with cause. The model has since inspired other Rotary districts and clubs across the country to follow suit — strengthening both local economies and Rotary’s impact.
The Impact Marketplace allows participating businesses to choose which products or services they make available for contributions and which causes they wish to support, creating a flexible, transparent, and rewarding way to do business for good.
It’s an everyday expression of Rotary’s Four-Way Test:
Is it the TRUTH? — Every transaction is transparent and trackable.
Is it FAIR to all concerned? — Businesses set their terms; communities share the benefit.
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? — It strengthens trust between local businesses, Rotary clubs, and the people they serve.
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? — Every offer supports lasting community impact.
Through the Impact Marketplace, commerce becomes a vehicle for compassion — a modern embodiment of Rotary’s vocational service at work.

Rotary Means Business: Fellowship with Purpose
A new Rotary Means Business (RMB) chapter is now being formed within District 5030, bringing together Rotarians and community business owners who believe in doing business the Rotary way — with integrity, friendship, and purpose.
RMB is the fastest-growing Rotary Fellowship worldwide, connecting members who understand that strengthening business relationships strengthens Rotary itself. Across the globe, RMB chapters are re-energizing Rotary’s vocational roots — helping members support one another professionally while amplifying Rotary’s impact through ethical enterprise.
This new chapter will provide a space to:
Connect and collaborate with fellow business leaders.
Build partnerships that align business success with community service.
Mentor and support ethical entrepreneurship in our region.
If you’re a business owner or professional interested in helping shape this exciting new chapter, we invite you to join the conversation and become part of its founding group.

RISE: Building Tomorrow’s Rotary Leaders
The RISE Program (Rotarians Inspired to Succeed & Engage) is District 5030’s professional-development initiative for emerging Rotary leaders. Through a six-week series of workshops, mentoring, and peer collaboration, participants strengthen their leadership skills, deepen Rotary knowledge, and build lasting connections across clubs.
Developed within our District, RISE has become a model for cultivating the next generation of Rotary leadership — empowering members to grow personally, professionally, and in service. By investing in people, RISE embodies the essence of Rotary’s vocational service: developing leaders who lift others.

Bringing It All Home
Economic and Community Development Month reminds us that strong economies create stronger communities, and that Rotary’s greatest impact often begins in the workplace.
When Rotarians bring their professions to Rotary’s mission — through the Impact Marketplace, Rotary Means Business, or the RISE Program — they renew the founding vision of our organization. By linking vocation with service, we don’t just create transactions — we create transformation.
