Empowering Communities: Celebrating Economic Development and Generosity in District 5030

Letter from the Editor – October 2024
By Chris Nakea, District 5030 Public Image Chair

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

October is upon us, and with it comes one of Rotary’s most impactful themes: Economic and Community Development. This theme is a reminder of the vital role we play in creating opportunities for sustainable growth, empowering individuals, and building stronger, more resilient communities.

Economic development goes beyond job creation—it’s about fostering environments where businesses can thrive, families can succeed, and communities can become self-sustaining. In District 5030, we are fortunate to have clubs that are making real strides in these areas, whether through microfinance initiatives, vocational training programs, or partnerships with local businesses.

One initiative that aligns perfectly with this month’s theme is our growing Community Benefit Business Network (CBBN). By partnering with local businesses, this platform allows them to contribute a portion of their sales to Rotary-backed causes, fostering economic growth while supporting important charitable work. I encourage all of you to explore how CBBN can benefit your club and community, creating a positive ripple effect in our local economies.

I also want to remind you of the upcoming Hunger Strike 2024 initiative, which officially launches on October 1st. This program not only raises vital funds for hunger relief but also serves as a platform for economic engagement within our communities. As clubs organize events, from bowling competitions to cornhole tournaments, we are directly supporting hunger relief programs while engaging local businesses and creating economic opportunities. I am excited to see how our clubs will rise to the challenge this year, with new events and the possibility of issuing friendly challenges to neighboring clubs.

In addition to all of this great work, I’m excited to share details about a very special event happening on October 10th. We are honored to welcome Rotary International Director-elect Wyn Spiller as our special guest for an evening of recognition and appreciation for our esteemed donors. The program will include stage recognition for donors who have increased their giving to the Rotary International Foundation between October 1, 2023, and October 1, 2024. These dedicated individuals will receive a special gift as a token of our gratitude for their generosity.

We will also celebrate all categories of contributions, including Paul Harris Fellows, Major Gifts, Arch Klumph Society (AKS) members, and Legacy donors. The generosity of these Rotarians enables us to continue our important work in economic development, education, healthcare, and more, both here at home and around the world.

As we focus on Economic and Community Development this month, I encourage all of you to reflect on the incredible impact we can make. Whether through the CBBN, Hunger Strike 2024, or your club’s own initiatives, we each have the power to help create economic stability and growth in our communities. I look forward to seeing all the ways you will contribute to this important work in the coming weeks.

Thank you for your dedication and service to Rotary’s mission. Together, we are making a lasting difference.

With gratitude and in service,
Chris Nakea
