A Beloved Rotarian and Champion for Youth and Community
With heartfelt remembrance, we honor the life and legacy of Jan Milligan, a devoted member of the Rotary Club of Vashon and a cherished figure in the broader Vashon Island community. Jan passed away peacefully at home after a courageous battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy of service, leadership, and compassion.
Known affectionately as “Kanga” to generations of campers and colleagues, Jan dedicated much of her life to empowering youth. She served for 15 years as the Director of Camp Sealth, a Camp Fire camp on Vashon Island, where she mentored countless young people and cultivated a spirit of adventure, resilience, and belonging.
Jan brought that same spirit of service to Rotary. A long-standing and active member of the Vashon Rotary Club, she faithfully managed club records, bulletins, and community engagement initiatives—including the Thriftway receipts program, which raised funds for Rotary service projects. She was instrumental in increasing Rotary’s visibility on the island, notably through efforts to update and install new signage along Vashon Highway.
Her professional journey also included a leadership role as Executive Director of the Vashon Park District, where she worked to navigate complex challenges with integrity and heart. Through it all, Jan’s unwavering dedication to her community never faltered.
Jan Milligan embodied Rotary’s motto, Service Above Self, in every facet of her life. Her warm presence, generous spirit, and commitment to building a better world continue to inspire us all. She will be deeply missed by her Rotary family, the Vashon community, and the many lives she touched.
We extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and fellow Rotarians. May her memory be a blessing—and a reminder of the power of one person to make a lasting difference.
