Successful 8th Annual Challenge Race!

On Saturday, June 14, as the Rotary Club of Lynnwood hosted the 8th Annual Challenge Series Derby Car Race at Lynnwood Elementary School. The inclusive event brought together 51 racers, 6 trained youth co-drivers, their families, and 36 enthusiastic volunteers for a memorable morning celebrating ability and inclusion. The Challenge Series Derby is a unique event designed for children with developmental disabilities. Racers are paired with youth co-drivers and guided down a derby ramp in specially designed, two-person cars. The event emphasizes accessibility, joy, and creating opportunities for kids of all abilities to experience the thrill of racing in a supportive environment. “We saw so many smiles that day—it was incredible,” shared one event volunteer. “It brings me so much joy to be part of something so meaningful. It’s truly an honor to volunteer with such a wonderful group of people.” Beyond the racetrack, attendees enjoyed a lively festival atmosphere. The morning included:
  • Face painting
  • Balloon twisting
  • Bounce house fun
  • Free T-shirts for participants
  • The Kool Kids Ice Cream Truck
  • Chick-fil-A lunch
  • Fire truck and tow truck exploration
The event was co-sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lynnwood, the City of Lynnwood, the Edmonds School District, and Life Enrichment Options (LEO)—a nonprofit organization that supports individuals with developmental disabilities through housing, recreation, education, and employment advocacy. The derby cars used in the race were originally designed by Leo Finnegan, a passionate advocate and co-host of the event. Inspired by his son’s love of racing, Finnegan helped create the Challenge Series as a way to give children with developmental disabilities a chance to participate in an exciting and empowering community event. Now in its eighth year, the Challenge Series continues to grow as one of the region’s most beloved inclusive traditions—bringing together families, volunteers, and partners to champion compassion, access, and connection.
