Helping Girls Learn, Grow and Flourish
Two Rotary Districts, One Shared Commitment: Building a Continuing Partnership with FloreSer Girls Home in Mazatlán
For the past three years, Shoreline Rotary in Rotary District 5030 and South Everett/Mukilteo Rotary in Rotary District 5050 have worked together to support FloreSer Girls Home in Mazatlán, Mexico. Their shared efforts are helping create a safe and encouraging environment where girls can learn, build confidence and prepare for more independent futures.
FloreSer serves girls and young women who have faced difficult or vulnerable circumstances. In addition to providing a secure home, the organization surrounds them with caring adults, educational opportunities and experiences that help them discover their abilities and imagine new possibilities for their lives.
What makes this partnership especially meaningful is its multi-District reach. Rotarians from two neighboring Rotary Districts have contributed financial support, service and personal involvement, responding to needs identified by FloreSer and building a relationship that reaches far beyond any single project. In one year, Lake Forest Park Rotary and University District Rotary Club also joined in supporting FloreSer projects.
A Multi-District Partnership in Action
Shoreline and South Everett/Mukilteo Rotarians have worked alongside FloreSer leaders and residents on improvements to the home. Service visits have included painting and other practical work, giving Rotarians an opportunity to listen, learn and see firsthand how thoughtful improvements can strengthen daily life for the girls.
The projects have grown from basic improvements to investments in education, mental-health support, recreation and everyday living. Together, they reflect a simple goal: help FloreSer provide not only a safe home, but a place where girls can learn, grow, develop confidence and prepare for the future.
Together, the clubs have supported a computer lab, English education, psychological counseling, music lessons, bathroom and laundry improvements, an outdoor eating and cooking area, and a sports court with equipment for multiple activities.
Building a Place to Learn and Connect
One of the partnership’s major investments was the creation of a computer lab equipped with 10 computers. The project transformed an existing room into a dedicated learning space where the girls can complete school assignments, conduct research and develop technology skills.
For students who may not otherwise have regular access to a computer, the lab provides an important opportunity to learn, practice and prepare for college and employment. The completed space offers 10 workstations and a shared environment for homework, research and skill development.

Creating Space for Recreation, Music and Teamwork
The two Rotary clubs also supported the creation of a sports court at the home and provided the equipment needed to make it a versatile recreational space. The court and equipment support basketball, badminton, pickleball and volleyball, giving the girls opportunities for exercise, teamwork, communication, perseverance and fun.
Supporting the Whole Girl
The partnership extends beyond classrooms and recreation. Shoreline and South Everett/Mukilteo Rotarians have also funded counseling by a psychologist for several girls, recognizing the importance of emotional support as part of a young person’s development.
The clubs purchased guitars and paid for guitar lessons, creating another opportunity for the girls to explore music, develop skills and enjoy a creative outlet.
The clubs also funded an expanded remodel of the showers, vanity and bathroom area, purchased new washers and dryers, and remodeled an outdoor eating and cooking area. These practical improvements make everyday life at FloreSer more comfortable and functional while helping maintain a welcoming home.
Each of these investments responds to a different need, but together they contribute to an environment where the girls can feel supported, develop new interests and gain skills that can serve them well beyond their years at FloreSer.
Opening Doors Through English Education
Education remains an important part of the partnership. Last year, Shoreline and South Everett/Mukilteo Rotary provided funding that allowed one FloreSer student to take English classes through the Autonomous University of Sinaloa. Building on that beginning, four additional students started English studies in August 2026.
For these young women, learning English can provide practical advantages as they continue their education and enter the workforce. In a city such as Mazatlán, where tourism and international business are important parts of the local economy, English proficiency may broaden employment possibilities and strengthen a résumé.
The classes also represent something less easily measured but equally important: the knowledge that people believe in the girls’ potential and are willing to invest in their goals.
Looking Ahead: The Partnership Continues
South Everett/Mukilteo Rotarians are returning to FloreSer again this year and are funding four additional projects identified as priorities for the home: a kitchen remodel, furniture repair, air conditioning for the psychologist’s counseling room, and a new BBQ grill for the outdoor cooking area.
This is Service Above Self in action across Rotary District 5030 and Rotary District 5050—two clubs building on a shared relationship with a trusted community partner and investing in the girls’ education, well-being, confidence and future.
Shoreline Rotarians may join the effort as well, continuing the spirit of collaboration between Rotary District 5030 and Rotary District 5050. The next projects build on earlier investments while responding to current needs at FloreSer.
Shoreline and South Everett/Mukilteo Rotary are proud to stand with FloreSer and the remarkable girls and young women who call it home. As the partnership continues, Rotarians look forward to helping even more students learn, grow and flourish.
